< ProjectsUntitled Adventure Type Game

Since I was a little boy, I dreamed of being a baseball.. but aside from that I wanted to create an old school side view adventure game. Not a scroller, but one of those that displays one screen at a time and you have to run, jump, and climb around the screen picking up keys and opening doors and flipping switches and avoiding enemies or the such. Well, I have made one.. or rather an early engine for one.
It's created in QuickBASIC 4.5 with assistance from TextWrangler* in OS X, and it runs in DOS or DOSBox. Eventually I will put up a demo or beta that you can play. Eventually.
* Did you know that if you set your .BAS file's text mode to "VB Script" in TextWrangler, it not only color codes the file, but it also gives you a nifty pull-down list for jumping between Subroutines an Functions! God bless Microsoft for creating at least one standard.
What it does so far...
- The character will walk at tile-based intervals.
- The character can climb ladders (Or vines or ropes if you will)
- The character can jump over single tile width holes.
- The character can also climb up one tile high walls like steps.
- The maps are connected to each other. This can allow for a huge world as big as my imagination, which has been gone since my mom took away my LEGO's in the mid-90's.
- Doors have been implemented. A system of doors and ID's with a routine for opening or closing whatever door you want no matter what room it is in. (Even if it's not on the current map. It could be.. at the top of the world for all that matters.)
- Aside from doors, we have switches that can be activated either by key press or walking into it. Switches can open doors so far, will do other things later on.
What I want to add...
- A power-up to allow for longer jumps.
- Enemies, and lots of them. At least one per screen.
- Pits with spikes, lava or water that kills the player. The water will be especially hilarious as the player will be swallowed by a shark when he falls in. Like the big fish in Balloon Fight.
- I need to create my own character. I am using Mario as a placeholder since he's better to look at than a circle. But I will need a proper main character.
To do...
- Remove that goddamned flickering. I am this close to it. It's right there in front of my face, but it won't go away!
Create a proper Fade Up routine. The Fade Down works fine, but not the Up!Fixed
